| CONCERT BAND The NLHS "Concert Band" serves as the instrumental music class for those students who do not elect to participate in Marching Band during the Fall Semester but would like to still take a band class. This class is usally small (25 to 30 students), but a highly successful, educational and fun class. The group spends a great deal of time working on technique and tone. Much attention is given to scales and other fundamentals. Band literature in the levels II thru IV is rehearsed and performed. This band performs at two concerts during the semester. SYMPHONY BAND During the Fall Semester, the "Symphony Band" doubles as the NLHS Marching Band. Rehearsing marching band music (show, pre-game and stand tunes) during the months of September and October is a priority. About mid-October, students begin working on levels IV, V and VI concert literature in addition to the Marching Band music. This band will perform at least two concerts during the semester, along with numerous performances at ballgames, competitions and community events. The NLHS Symphony Band performed in 2006 for the NCMEA Conference in Winston-Salem as a featured ensemble. The honor of this selection was earned from the record of "Superiors" the Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble had received in their previous years. SYMPHONIC BAND The NLHS "Symphonic Band" is a second semester class made up primarily of freshmen and sophomore students. Some upper-classmen do choose, however, to stay in the Symphonic Band through their high school career. This band has a history of "Superior" ratings in Grade IV at NCBA State Concert Festival. The Symphonic Band performs at three concerts and members are strongly encouraged to participate in Solo and Ensemble Festival. WIND ENSEMBLE The "Wind Ensemble" at North Lincoln is a selected group of band students who are serious about playing quality literature at the highest levels expected for high school students. This band class meets during the Spring Semester. Members of the Wind Ensemble may choose their junior and senior years to take Honors Band A or B to receive Honors Credit. The expectations for these students in Wind Ensemble is much more demanding than the regular class. The NLHS Wind Ensemble has received consistent "Superiors" in Grade VI at NCBA State Concert Festival, and the Woodwind and Brass Ensembles have never received less than a "Superior" at SCDBA Solo and Ensemble Festival. The Wind Ensemble presents four or five concerts during the semester. In 2005 the NLHS Wind Ensemble performed as North Carolina's representative in Washington, DC at the WWII Memorial for the 60th Anniversary of the ending of WWII. Additionally in the Spring of 2008, the Wind Ensemble gave a concert in the IBM/Trump Tower in New York City. The Wind Ensemble has also received "Superior" ratings at the Great Smoky Mountain Festival in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, and at the Fiesta-Val in Atlanta, Georgia. ![]() |
