North Lincoln High School “Band of Knights”

The “Band of Knights” is a mix of classroom instruction and co-curricular activity. It includes:
? Wind Ensemble
? Symphonic Band
? Marching Band
? Jazz Band
? Colorguard
? Indoor Percussion
? Winterguard
? Small Ensembles
? Pep Band
? Soloist Opportunities

PURPOSE
The purpose of the “Band of Knights” is to educate young people through music performance. Our time together will not be limited to simply learning about music, although that is our primary purpose. By your involvement in these organizations you will mature as a musician, student and person. The curriculum is cyclical in nature; while there is similarity from year to year, the comprehensive program encompasses four years of study. Individual development of character, esteem, team work and group accomplishment can be additional rewards of participation in band at North Lincoln.

GRADING
Grading All students enrolled in Band related classes will receive a grade for work completed in class. The following factors will determine your quarterly grade:
? Preparation and participation in all concerts, after-school rehearsals and other events
? Tests (playing and written)
? Assignments (playing and written)
? Group Work
? General attitude and work ethic in class

Extra credit is given to students who participate in marching band activities, private lessons, All-County, audition for All-District, participate in Solo and Ensemble Festival, are a part of extracurricular musical ensemble and assist with the administration of NLHS band duties.

NLHS grading scale is as follows:
A 93-100
B 85-92
C 77-84
D 70-76
F less than 70

The “Band of Knights” - Fall Semester Band Classes:

BAND I (all Marching Band students) – 4th period

Music Exploration (Colorguard students) – 2nd period

This group, because of its’ nature, requires the most out-of-school rehearsals, performances, time, and money. Much of Marching Band is extra-curricular. However, music is learned and polished in class time. Credit for all outside-of-class work is reflected for the time and work in the student’s band class grade. Rehearsals are Mondays, Tuesdays 3:30 till 5:30 after school, and Thursdays 6:00 to 8:30pm. Monday afternoons are dropped when the director feels that the show is complete and competitions on Saturdays begin. Tuesday afternoon and Thursday evening practices continue for the entire marching season. There may be a case where an afternoon rehearsal needs to be moved to evening, or evening to afternoon due to conflicts. In this event, information will be given at least one week in advance, if possible. Extra credit will be applied to grades while marching is active.

Competitions take place on Saturdays from the third weekend in September to the first Saturday in November. A detailed competition schedule will be given to students at Band Camp, and a tentative schedule is included in this handbook. The band may not compete every Saturday during the season (though the students usually want to). It is normal to compete on five Saturdays, in addition to hosting our own contest. Events such as the Apple Festival, Lincolnton Christmas Parade and other local community functions are also required. Large extended trips (three days or more) may also take place. There are other chances to attend large regional and national level competitions that may take us away for two or three days at a time. Any over night trips will be announced prior to the season starting so that plans can be made. Fundraising events for large trips will be provided.

Students must attend all rehearsals and performances! When a member is out, it reflects negatively in the performance and in the judge’s score. At rehearsals it is difficult to practice with “holes” in the show. Therefore, only in extreme cases should students miss. If an absence is unavoidable, a written note must be given to Mr. Underwood, preferably prior to the absence. Since this is an extra-curricular activity, too many missed rehearsals and performances will result in the student being removed from Marching Band.

DRIVER’S EDUCATION CLASSES OR DRIVING IS NOT AN EXCUSE! DO NOT SCHEDULE THESE CLASSES OR ACTIVITIES DURING BAND CAMP OR MARCHING SEASON.

Colorguard students will sign up for this class as Music Exploration. Guard members meet during 2nd period class with Mr. Underwood.

BAND II – 3rd period – Concert Band (those students who do not march)

This class is offered to all band students not participating in Marching Band during the Fall Semester. Concert Band receives a full unit of credit and will be expected to perform in concerts and possibly other school and local functions. After school performances are required and graded.

Spring Semester Band Classes:

Wind Ensemble – usually 3rd period The Wind Ensemble is a very selective “top” level group of young musicians. Each member is expected to act as mature gentlemen and ladies. This group may travel and have more performances than the Symphonic Band. In all possible cases, at least three weeks notification of any extra performance will be given. Students are required to attend all outside-of-class performances and rehearsals. If a scheduled event is missed without a valid excuse, a “0” will be given to the student as a test grade. (The director will merit if the excuse is valid.)

For concerts, a uniform will be chosen by the director and will be the student’s responsibility to purchase or have made. Normally, the Wind Ensemble Uniform (same as marching uniform without the overlay) will be worn.

Outside activities such as participation in other extra-curricular band activities, honor’s band organizations, performing in church, etc…are counted as extra credit.

Symphonic Band – usually 4th period All freshmen (9th grader) band students take Symphonic Band, unless appointed otherwise by director. This class is the transition and development level band to Grade V and VI music. In the past, such bands have had very successful records at State Concert Festival with Mr. Underwood. Therefore, this is not to be considered a less important or less serious band class than the Wind Ensemble. The Symphonic Band is the “growing” area for the Wind Ensemble and the Marching Band. In addition, upper classmen may take this class if unable to take the 3rd period class or wishing to take an additional band class.

Like Wind Ensemble, a uniform will be required and will be the responsibility of the student (if different from the marching uniform without the overlay). Marching Band members and non-marching band student rules apply the same as Wind Ensemble. Extra-credit procedure is the same as Wind Ensemble.

Other Classes and Groups: \

Colorguard and Winterguard The Colorguard in the Marching Band is a vital part of the “Band of Knights” entire show concept and package. They are considered another section of the band, just as is the trumpet section or the drum line. These young people must take the same serious attitude about performance that the instrumental ensembles have in their playing. Those in the fall Colorguard must be enrolled in the class Music Exploration Class, which usually meets 3rd period during the school day (along with the 3rd period band class). See the information above for Marching Band.

Winterguard begins about one week after marching band ends and meets throughout the Spring Semester with rehearsals totally outside of the school day; rehearsals will be limited to three times per week. This group will travel and compete at local, state, regional, and national level contests. NLHS Colorguard Instructor, Lisa Biggs, and her capable assistants, will instruct the colorguard groups.

Parents who can assist with sewing flags, helping with make-up and hair, and other assistance at rehearsals and performance are needed to volunteer their time, both during the fall marching season and during Winterguard.

Jazz Band Extra-curricular groups such as Jazz Band practice after school and rehearse after marching season is complete. Even though it is not a class, the importance of rehearsal attendance and student commitment to make the Jazz Band a successful organization cannot be overstated. Trips and festivals are at the option of the directors to reward students for their hard work. Performances will be announced at least two weeks prior to the performance. The Jazz Band will play a wide variety of jazz and rock music. Membership to this group is by director approval.

The Band of Knights Jazz Band is instructed by Mr. Jerry Lowe, with assistance from Mr. Underwood.

Indoor Percussion Ensemble Also an extra-curricular group that meets outside of the school day, the Indoor Percussion Ensemble can develop into a concert drum ensemble or a marching drum line. This group’s existence depends on the interest and availability of student participation. Attendance at rehearsals for this group is required of members, and the level of commitment must be at the same level of marching band members. Membership to this group is by director approval. Small Ensembles and Solo Opportunities Many students choose to participate in small ensembles in their free time. Rehearsal space and some music will be provided. Assistance from directors and staff will also be available when possible. But, primarily, this is a great chance for students to experience musical growth on their own, with their peers. The South Central District Solo and Ensemble Festival will be held at North Lincoln High School in May of 2009. Fees for these activities are held to a minimum and may be set by the state organization.

The Tri-M (see Tri-M) recital will be held each year during the spring months. Each small ensemble and student soloists are encouraged to perform.

Private Lessons All students are strongly urged to study privately on their instruments! This is one of the best ways to become a stronger performer, thus improving the quality of the band program. There are several private teachers in the area available on most instruments. See Mr. Underwood about a list.

Honor Band Classes

Honors credit is offered through Lincoln County Schools and the North Carolina Board of Education for juniors and seniors who want to take band class at the honors level. This class is offered as a part of the Wind Ensemble in the Spring Semester of each school year. There are many extra requirements for these students; auditioning for All-District and other honors bands, participation in honors bands where student is selected, participation in Tri-M Recital and Solo and Ensemble Festival, theory workbook, a subject based essay, and a portfolio of performance and practice during the semester. Appointment to these classes must be done through Mr. Underwood.

Tri-M (Modern Music Masters)
North Lincoln Chapter #4287

Tri-M Honor Society for middle and high school musicians is sponsored by Music Educators National Conference, the organization all music educators must belong to for their students to participate in state, regional, and national band activities. This group is open to all band and choral students and is a service group for our high school music organizations. Recitals, planning master-classes, visiting performers and lecturers, and special projects for the betterment of music at North Lincoln are the major focus of this student lead organization. Mr. and Mrs. Underwood are the faculty sponsors for North Lincoln’s Tri-M Chapter.

Scholarships and other benefits are available through the national chapter of Tri-M. Students must maintain an overall “C” average in school, and an “A” average in music classes to be a member of Tri-M.

Dues for Tri-M are $12.00 for the initial year and $5.00 for each year afterwards.

General Rules for All Band Classes

? No Gum, Food, or Drink in the band room!!!
? No talking when the director is talking.
? Have instrument, music, pencil, and needed materials ready when the director is ready for class to start. (You will be given at least three minutes past the tardy bell to be in your seat and set.) No, you cannot come in the room late (without a note)…ISS has a seat for you!
? Have a “Superior” working attitude and work habits or …GET OUT!!!
? If you have to be sent to the office, you have really messed up!
? Remember that this is YOUR band….act accordingly!

This is vitally important: if you do not have the right attitude for hard work, getting along with your peers, teachers and other staff; and, if you are not willing to work to be the absolute best that you can be…then the “Band of Knights” is Not for you!

However, if you DO have the right attitude…you must be prepared to have one of the best, most fun, educational, and most rewarding experiences of your life!! There is nothing else in public education quite like band. In addition to simply learning to play a musical instrument you can experience the physical, emotional, esthetic, scientific and mathematical, while learning to cooperate and work with others, all at the same time. What other activity offers so much?

Expectations of Band Students
? All members of this organization have the desire to achieve.
? All members of this organization have respect for their school institution and work diligently to attain academic excellence.
? All members of this organization treat other members with respect.
? All members of this organization commit themselves to musical growth and performance excellence.
? All members of this organization represent the North Lincoln High School “Band of Knights” with professionalism, pride and enthusiasm.

**A Few of the Rules and Regulations**
Band Classes, Marching Band Practices and Trips, and After-School Band Activities

Practices must begin on time. If you are late for any reason, you will be required to stand 3 minutes “on the line” at attention after practice. Pit percussionist who are late will have to do 5 push-ups (increases by 5 for each tardy). These are not punishments (they are reminders), it is simply a rule that applies to everyone. The Drum Major or Personnel Manager will give a 1-minute warning at the rehearsal site before practice begins in order for students to get to the ready position.

Gum, food or drinks on the field in marching band will result laps at the end of rehearsal, or cleaning duty (one warning per practice for the entire group.) Students are encouraged to bring bottled water and gatorade.

Lack of respect for the Director, Staff, or student leaders may result in punishments such as laps, cleaning duties, or extra marching basics. If negative actions continue with a student, then the student will be considered insubordinate and may be removed from the marching band.

Band Rehearsals end at the assigned time. Announcements and other business will be conducted at the completion of practice. Boosters and students are asked to keep announcements and any business brief so that students may get out as quickly as possible. There may be an occasion when a practice goes slightly over the time. In this case, it may be the necessary moment that is needed to finish that final touch to win or lose a contest, or it may be because a special guest helping the band has taken more time than expected. Be assured that Mr. Underwood is aware of the time and that students need to get out of night practices as close to time as possible. However, there may be the time that a slight (5 to 10 minutes) overtime may occur. Parents please do not get angry, sit in the parking lot blowing the car horn. The reasoning behind the holdup, if it does exist, is very important. Mr. Underwood realizes everyone’s time is important.

Exact departure and return from trips with 130+ students can be difficult to time accurately. Mass feeding at fast food restaurants, contests that drag on longer than planned, or simply a victory celebration at the contest site often make arrival time back at NLHS difficult to estimate. Parents, please be understanding and patient. The students may use the band room phone when they return. However, please do not wait too long before you come to pick up your child. The best way to keep from having to wait in the parking lot late at night for the buses to return is to go with the band and support the young people. You will really like it! We have lots of “hooked” parents.

NO TOBACCO (SMOKING, CHEWING, DIPPING), DRUGS, OR ALCOHOL AT ANY BAND FUNCTION! If tobacco, drugs, or alcohol are found, it is IMMEDIATELY out of Mr. Underwood’s hands and becomes a matter for the high school administration.

Respect: Mr. Underwood, staff, and chaperones realize that you are young people and need to have fun. You must, however, show all of the adults involved with our program the utmost respect. This IS a requirement!

Keep your hands to yourself! Band sweethearts are well and good, but please remember where and who you are. Besides, no one else wants to see public displays of affection (i.e. kissing!). Chaperones and staff have the right to separate couples on the bus and in other situations when this rule is being broken. ON BUSES, or in any other location, NO TWO PERSONS TOGETHER UNDER A BLANKET IS ALLOWED!!!!! Storage and practice rooms in band facility are not for couple’s hangouts.

Take pride in your equipment, instrument, and uniform. Always have yourself and what you work with looking and sounding the best possible. School instruments are rented to students using them. However, students are responsible for any careless damage. UNIFORMS ARE NEVER TO BE WORN ANY WAY EXCEPT CORRECTLY!

School dress code applies to band functions! Also, no T-shirts with anything that could be taken negatively (no Bevis and Butthead, no alcohol related shirts, no Big Johnson shirts….got the idea?). Also, the correct manner of wearing ones pants should be observed in the band! Falling pants play havoc on the marching drill and prevent you from properly playing your instrument while you struggle not to trip. NO exposed mid-drifts (i.e., the shirt and the pants overlap at the waistband)! NO excessive cleavage! NO swimsuit tops! NO rolling the pants down to the hips!

Appropriate Movies for Buses on trips: There have been some issues in the past over movies shown on buses during band trips. Due to the varied content of movies rated PG-13, any movie rated over G or PG must be approved by Mr. Underwood before it can be shown on a bus. No chaperone or other staff member can give permission for PG-13 movies. Permission can only be given by Mr. Underwood. As we all know, some PG-13 movies are certainly fine for high school students. This, however, will be Mr. Underwood’s call. It goes without saying that any movie rated R or worse is not allowed on band trips, even in personal DVD players.

Failure to adhere to rules and expectations of the band program may result in punishments from the band director or staff, and continual abuse of rules will result in a student being removed from the band entirely. Yes, it has happened before…several times.

Band is a privilege! Treat it as such!

The best rule to follow: You know how to act…do it!

If there is any question as to whether you should or should not do something, the first clue that you shouldn’t is the fact that you are questioning it in the first place…So don’t do it!

We already have a great Band! You’re mission is to make it even better….on and off the stage or field.

Band Officers

Drum Major
In the spring, students interested in the drum major position(s) should begin preparation for an audition to be held in May. A drum major candidate must have completed one year of membership in the “Band of Knights” Marching Band (and be a rising 10-12 grader) to have their application considered. The director will use the following criteria for selection:
? Record in band
? Commitment to organization
? Strength of character
? Musical maturity
? Emotional maturity
? Academic record
? Awards
? Results of the conducting audition
? Peer rating
? Essay
? Instruction of new marching members during rookie training

The drum major(s) selection is announced at the year-end Band Awards Night. It is then the responsibility of the drum major(s) to complete instruction on the art of conducting and leadership, by either enrolling in a camp, or by seeking private instruction prior to the next marching season. The band director will select camps and instructors. Also, the expense of the uniform will be that of the drum major(s). The position of Drum Major is a one-year appointment. All students must reapply each spring for consideration.

Drill Sergeant, Captains, Manager, Librarians, Section Leaders
Each May, applicants for any of these positions must submit a written essay as to why the student wishes to have the appointment and evidence of deserving the position. All applicants will be reviewed on the basis of musical ability, maturity, commitment, work ethic, personal character, and past band record. The only requirement is one complete year of service to the North Lincoln High School “Band of Knights” Marching Band.

All Section Leaders and Captains should serve as role models. They should be expected to know music and routines first and best.

The duties of student leaders are complex. A successful organization requires skilled leaders. In the “Band of Knights” student leaders must have fortitude and a desire to work very hard. The responsible leader will:
? Provide instruction at musical and marching sectionals
? Be present at all rehearsals
? Work with the other leaders and drum majors to implement strategies for accomplishing band goals
? Encourage student involvement in band duties and fundraisers
? Run an inspection of uniform and equipment at each band performance
? Assist in maintaining good discipline at all rehearsals
? Find solutions for problems
? Support the band director and staff in all situations, and when confronted with a disagreement or problem, bring it to the director’s attention with the utmost respect and dignity.

A student leader in the “Band of Knights” is a leader at all times! He/She must set an example for all other students to follow. If a student leader is unable to fulfill these expectations, a qualified replacement will be selected.

Seniority: The Band of Knights operates using a student leadership system that recognizes seniority and ranking of officers. While the abuse of student authority is never acceptable, student leadership is encouraged. Students learn to work within the system by leading and following their peers. Students are encouraged to try for officer positions as upperclassmen. In order to attain leadership positions, students must follow set guidelines and expectations as described above.

When upperclassmen and officers are in good standing with the band system, they will be rewarded for their efforts, experience and leadership work by first dismissal for loading of buses and fast-food locations. Seniority Order is as follows: Seniors, Officers, Juniors, Sophomores, Freshmen, any other band students. Seniority DOES NOT out rank any adult assisting with band (chaperones, staff, directors).

North Lincoln High School Band Boosters Association, Inc.

Our NLHS Band Booster Association consists of parents, family, friends and alumni of the North Lincoln Band program. This organization’s purpose is to provide support for the North Lincoln “Band of Knights” programs and the staff. EVERY band parent SHOULD join the NLHS Band Booster Association. Yearly dues for membership are $5 per person. Emails, phone contacts, updates and newsletters are sent to members concerning the band and band booster’s activities.

The “Band of Knights” CANNOT compete and perform at the high standard set forth by Mr. Underwood and the staff without a VERY supportive booster organization. A supportive group of boosters is an absolute “MUST” for the success of any high school band program of quality.

Budget The North Lincoln Band Budget has two primary sources:
? The allotment of $8,000 from Lincoln County Schools, and
? Funds provided by the North Lincoln High School Band Boosters Organization.

The school accounts are only enough to cover most music purchases, some school instrument repairs and an occasional purchase of a new school-owned instrument. The Band Booster Organization covers the costs of the band from year to year including: Band Camp, extra staff for the entire year, supplies, colorguard equipment, props, competition expenses (entries and travel), and large items such as equipment trailer, band truck, and large band instruments (tubas, percussion, etc….).

FEE EXPLANATION (NOTE: Travel charges may also be incurred.) Marching Band Fee (for both instrument players and Colorguard members) There is no fee to participate in a band class at North Lincoln High School (except for instrument rental). However, to be a part of the Marching Band, the most costly organization due to size, travel, and its’ competitive nature, a membership fee is necessary. This fee assists in paying for extra staffing for specialized section work, prop and colorguard materials, drill fees, consultant fees, and other general costs of a show.

A Marching Band Fee of $200 is charged per student (both for instrument players and colorguard members) to help the band booster organization offset the high cost of outside instructors, equipment, instruments, maintenance of equipment, props, and music/drill. This fee is very low compared to many other bands of our caliber.

For information sake: additional instructional staff fees usually run about $20,000 a season, drill design $5,500, music arrangements $3,500, percussion music $1,500, colorguard equipment $2,000 and props for the show $4,000.

Marching Band Uniform Fee
Uniforms are provided for horn line, front ensemble, drummers, and colorguard. These uniforms are to be cared for and dry cleaned regularly by the Band Boosters. Any excessive damage will result in a charge. If a student loses any of the uniform parts, he/she will be charged for the item. There is a $50 Uniform Fee to pay for cleaning of the uniform throughout the year. This year the Uniform Fee will include the Show T-Shirt. The show t-shirt will be worn at several functions, including Pep Bands.

Special costuming may be used at the discretion of band staff. In this event, a fee may be established to cover these costs. Colorguard costumes may vary year to year and the member may be responsible for purchasing the costume. The school owned uniform and Show T-Shirt will be covered by the normal Uniform Fee. Colorguard members are also expected to provide the required practice outfit. Uniform parts for horn line, front ensemble and drummers to be purchased by students:
? Black band shoes: The shoes will be ordered through the band and must be paid for at the time of ordering (normally $35 - $40). More information about the shoes will be available at the band camp in August. If shoes are bought elsewhere, they must be exactly the same. We do have a collection of “used band shoes” available for any students with need. Graduating band students and those who out-grow their shoes are asked to donate their used band shoes for this purpose.
? Black long wrist cotton gloves must be purchased from the band at $5 a pair (available in the fall).
? Black (and only Black) socks.
? Band Polo Shirt and black dress or work pants to be worn with black shoes and socks as a lighter, less formal uniform. The polo shirt is $20 (larger sizes are more) and must be purchased through the band (see Fee Schedule for ordering information). Black pants must be purchased elsewhere. Colorguard members will also be required to wear the band polo shirts for the informal uniform. Members will be informed as to what pants need to be worn.

School Instrument Use Fee

Each student using an instrument owned by North Lincoln High School will be assessed a $30 fee per semester. This includes all percussion. The fee covers all general use, regular maintenance, and wear and tear on the instrument. This does NOT cover abuse over and beyond normal use. This fee applies to all concert and marching school owned instruments. When a student pays the School Instrument Rental Fee once in a semester, he/she may use all school instruments assigned during the semester without being charged any additional fees. The School Instrument Rental Fee is NOT eligible for reduction in our Reduced Fees Program.

This fee is due on the first day of band camp (if in marching band) or the first day of the semester (for non-marching band students and spring semester band students).

Reeds, sticks, and extra mouthpieces are the responsibility of individual players. Marching percussionist will be required to purchase their own sticks. This will be set up by the director along with percussion instructor.

Reduced Fees Program

The North Lincoln Band Boosters have worked with the school system to devise a method of fairly managing a financial assistance plan for those students, and their families who may have difficulty paying the Marching Band and Uniform fees for participation in our organizations. A form is available (as an attachment in this handbook or in Mr. Underwood’s office) to apply for Reduced Fees through our Band Boosters. This form is very similar to Reduced Lunch Assistance available from Lincoln County Schools. Only Mr. Underwood and the Band Booster Treasurer(s) will be aware of students that have applied for this help. Using this system allows every student to participate in band activities, regardless of economic status.

While we are glad to provide this service to those needing assistance, we do expect that students (and their families) receiving Reduced Fees are respectful of the system and do not take advantage. All those on a Reduced Fees are strongly encouraged to participate in EVERY fundraising activity. Mr. Underwood has used the philosophy of “no child left behind” for years. However, he does expect all students to pull their own weight in assisting the band organization as well as performing their part.

Colorguard and Percussion Camp Fee

Because Colorguard and Percussion members may require additional practices with staff throughout the summer and have a required camp prior to the regular band camp in late July/August, a Colorguard and Percussion Camp Fee of $40 is necessary to offset the additional cost of instructors. Colorguard and Percussion Camp Fees are NOT eligible for reduction in our Reduced Fees Program.

Jazz Band Fee

A fee of $40 will be charged to members of this group to offset cost of music and contest entry fees. The Jazz Band Fee is NOT eligible for reduction in our Reduced Fees Program. This fee is due at the start of spring semester.

Indoor Percussion Ensemble Fee A fee of $50 will be charged to members of this group to offset cost of music, contest entry fees, and outside instruction. Additional charges may be necessary if the Ensemble participates in numerous contests; fundraisers will be provided to assist in offsetting these additional costs. The Indoor Percussion Ensemble Fee is NOT eligible for reduction in our Reduced Fees Program. This fee is due at the start of spring semester.

Winterguard Fee

A fee of $100.00 will be charged for membership in Winterguard to offset the cost of materials and outside instruction. A separate uniform may be required for Winterguard and will be the responsibility of members to fund. Several fundraisers will be provided to assist members with need issues. The Winterguard Fee is NOT eligible for reduction in our Reduced Fees Program. This fee is due at the start of Spring Semester.

***AGAIN I STRESS: NO STUDENT should ever be left out of band because they cannot afford to pay. However, it is expected that all paperwork for payment plans is turned in and every effort to assist in fundraising for the band is made. Thank you, Mr. Underwood Forms All parents/guardians MUST fill out and sign the attached forms or the student will NOT be allowed to participate in Marching Band. The Marching Band Agreement form must be turned in at the end of Rookie Training. All other forms MUST be turned in by the BEGINNING of band camp in the summer. In accordance with Lincoln County policy, all medical/health forms and release forms necessary for trips must be turned in prior to the season.

The following forms must be returned no later than the beginning of band camp:
School Instrument Use (also for use by non-marching band students)
Reduced Fees Program (if needed)
Emergency Health Care/Permission to Treat Form
Request for Medication to be Given at Band Events (if needed)

Medications at Band Practice and Band Events

If your child must have medication of any type (prescription or over-the-counter) given at band practice or during any band event, the parent or guardian may choose to:
Come to the practice or event and give the medication to your child as prescribed by your doctor or health care provider.
OR
1. Provide a medication administration form for both prescription (including inhalers) and over-the-counter medications, filled out by the health care provider with complete instructions and directions for administration. This form must be signed by the health care provider AND parent.

2. Prescription medication must be brought to school and given to Mr. Underwood or the Band Booster Head Chaperone by the parent, in a pharmacy labeled bottle with your child’s name, dosage, and instructions. It will be counted at the time you bring it to school, with you and the person counting verifying the count.

3. If you wish to supply over-the-counter medications (cough syrup, Tums, Tylenol, Calamine Lotion, etc.), they must be in the original containers and labeled with your child’s name. The Band Staff and Band Boosters do maintain a small supply of over-the-counter medications. The medication administration form from the health care provider must be on file before medication can be dispensed. This means that your doctor must sign the form for over-the-counter medications. We cannot give your child ANY pain relievers without this form!

4. Once the proper forms are provided, the Band Staff or Band Boosters Chaperone will be able to administer the medications to your child. These criteria are mandates of North Carolina Law.

North Lincoln High School
Band of Knights
2008-2009 Marching Band Agreement

Each member of the North Lincoln High School “Band of Knights” must understand their importance to the overall show at each rehearsal and performance of the band. In every case when there is an absence, it becomes a hole in the show. This hole may result in negative scores at contest, and also requires that other members of the band make necessary, often difficult, adjustments for the absent individual.

The director, staff and students understand that there may be times that an absence is unavoidable. However, by signing this agreement the student and their parents/ or guardians state that they will make every attempt possible not to miss performances and rehearsals.

Also, there have been years where students tell directors that they will be a member of the next fall’s marching band and then are “no-shows” for band camp. This creates a great problem for the staff and the entire band. The Band Boosters pay $5,500 for a professionally written drill. The drill writers spend many hours working on a drill that will rank our band in a regional and national level. When a student does not show, or quits band, each member of the band must have every spot in the show changed to make up for the missing person. There are 140+ members in the band this year, and our shows have as many as 60 drill charts that each individual will have to “fix” if someone doesn’t honor his/her responsibility.

Therefore, you are asked to make this signed commitment to be here for camp, the rehearsals and performances of the marching band. If there are times that a student MUST miss, a note from the parents/guardians is expected prior to the absence if possible. Communication with Mr. Underwood is key to the success of our band. If the student wants to march, this commitment must be made prior to summer (May 15th or 16th at Parent Night or last day of Rookie Training).

Thank you,

N. Underwood

RIDE HOME RELEASE FORM This form is required for all band trips where parents request that students ride home separately from the band. All performing students will ride with the band TO all events. This is nonnegotiable. However, students are allowed to leave band events with approved persons after this paper is signed by parents/guardians, and the student and adult picking-up student checks-out with bus chaperones. Students are not allowed to check-out until all required obligations are completed (performance, marching out of stadium, loading truck, etc...). A separate form is needed for each event, and should be given to Mr. Underwood prior to departure for that event. Not following this simple procedure can result in much confusion. This action is necessary for the safety and protection of all students.
