| Letter/Email sent Aug. 19, 2008 Students and Parents, Things are going VERY well for the Band of Knights. After the wonderful camp weeks, it was great to see the students continue the hard work last night at practice. Here are a few items that need your attention as we progress into this week and get ready for our first game and school to begin next week. 1. Thursday (Aug. 21st) is regular Band Practice 6:00-8:30. This is also the evening for Open House at both NLHS and NLMS. Please plan for your students to attend Open House in the earlier portion so that they can be at Band Practice by 6:00. I realize this may be impossible for those NLMS students, but please try to get over to high school for practice as quickly as possible. We do have our first performance the next night. We WILL NOT play for Open House this year, so Band Practice will begin at 6:00 (regular Thursday evening time). 2. In addition to Open House and Band Practice on Thursday, Mrs. Royston will be fitting those students who were not fitted for uniforms during camp. Uniform Fitting for those who did not get this complete during Band Camp will begin at 4:00 on Thursday and go until Band Practice begins. PLEASE make sure to allot enough time for Mrs. Royston to work with you on getting your uniform fitted. 3. We are now in GREAT NEED of some items I've been begging for over the past weeks. Please understand, our Band Fees are minimum and compared to most bands our size who we compete with, our fees are FAR less. We can do this because of cooperation from parents and community in efforts like this. Please donate these items if you possibly can. We have 135 members in this year's marching band. It takes a lot of the items listed below to function. With a game on Friday night, we are in desperate need to get these donations now. ITEMS NEEDED: *Paper Cups for water at rehearsal (have about one week's worth...need enough for eight weeks) *Soft Drinks in Cans (we don't have enough for the first game this week/ will need hundreds for games and contests...we always serve the visiting band as well) *Cookies, Chips, Snacks: Those that come bulk in the individual packages are best. Packages of cookies will do as well. (We don't have enough for this Friday, not to mention future games and the Roundtable.) I'll stop "bugging" you about these items when we get enough. Sorry to be a pest...but it for our kids. 4. Friday Night Football: This week at the game we will wear the Band t-shirt and shorts (just like for the preview at camp). The game is at 7:30. Students need to be at NLHS by 6:00. We will march in for Pre-Game at around 7:00. DO NOT BE LATE!!!!! We will perform part of show at halftime. The band does not dismiss until we have marched back to the school after the game is over. 5. Next week (after school begins): We will begin our regular practice schedule; Monday and Tuesday 3:30-6:00, then Thursday 6:00-8:30. Next Friday (Aug 29) we have an away game. This will be Pep Band (all students must do at least 2 Pep Bands....we have FUN). 6. Band Booster Association meeting: Thursday Aug. 28th at 7:00 in Chorus Room I hope you're as proud of what we're doing as I am of our entire band family! We're off to an incredible start! We can't do it without ALL of you!!!! Have a great week and see you at band!!!!! N. Make checks payable to “The Bandroom” and either send with students on Aug. 13th or mail to Mr. Whittemore. CHILLIE WILLIE As you know, Band Camp and band practices (until late season) are HOT. Some of our students discovered “Chillie Willies.” These are neck wraps with non-toxic plastic granules inside that cool for several hours after being soaked in cold water. Locally made, we will have these available to purchase at Pre-Camp and Band Camp for $10.00. These will be in our band/school colors. These are an excellent option for students to stay a little cooler on the field during practice. BAND FEES DUE BY THIS POINT As stated in your Band Handbook, the fees due by this date are: $75.00 Marching Band Fee deposit was due in May. If not paid by now, please do so. $50.00 Uniform Fee was due by June 1st. MUST BE PAID before student will receive Band Show Shirt Colorguard and Percussion Camp Fees should be paid by the start of these camps; $40.00 for each. 2nd installment of Marching Band Fee is $75.00 due by August 8th. Those who use a school owned instrument need to pay the 1st semester use fee by Aug. 8th; $30.00 *Don’t forget to apply for Reduced Fee Assistance if needed. WEEK AFTER BAND CAMP Since Band Camp is a week later this year, we will not have a week off after Band Camp. Since there is no school (for students) during these days, we will practice in evenings. Mon. and Tues. Aug. 18th and 19th will be 6:00-8:30. On Thursday Aug. 21st we will have NLHS Open House. As in past, students should plan to visit their classes starting at 4:00. The band will gather in band room at 5:30. We’ll plan on playing some “pep band” music at the school entrance. Afterwards, we’ll have our rehearsal. On Friday, Aug. 22nd, we have our first home game. We WILL perform. You will need your Band Polo Shirt by this time (rest of uniform for this night TBA). INFORMAL UNIFORM Often we have times to perform where it is too hot or not necessary to wear the full formal band uniform. In these cases we wear an Informal Uniform. BAND POLO SHIRT: These are available through our Band Boosters at a cost of $15 for sizes small thru extra large. Add $3 for size XXL and $5 for XXXL. Polo shirts are available for parents to purchase as well. We will begin selling to parents after students have had the chance to purchase. There are a very limited number of used shirts available to any student with need. See Mr. Underwood. In addition to polo shirt, students must purchase black work/dress pants (not hip huggers). These can be found very inexpensively at many discount stores. Colorguard members wear black shorts and not pants. Band / Guard Shoes and black socks are worn with the informal uniform as well. BAND SHOW T-SHIRTS Each year we have an official Show Shirt to celebrate the season’s show. This year our War and Peace Show Shirts are included for students as part of the Uniform Fee. This must be paid before students will be given the shirts. Non band members can purchase the shirts for $10.00 (after band students have been given shirts). XXL and XXXL are $2 and $3 more. Band students can purchase extra shirts if they wish. TIE-DYE SHOW SHIRTS Just for fun (optional…not required of anyone) we are selling royal blue tie-dye show shirts. There will be a very limited number of these available at Band Camp. After these are sold, we will take orders during Band Camp for more tie-dyed shirts. These have the big “War and Peace” logo in white on the front (without “war”). The tie-dye shirts are $15.00 for small thru extra large, $17.00 for XXL and $18.00 for XXXL. THESE ARE REALLY COOL!!!! OTHER BAND OF KNIGHTS ITEMS We also have available Band of Knight’s Jackets and Duffle Bags. Order forms will be available soon in the band room and on the website. Jackets begin at $40.00. Bags are $30.00. Polo Shirts are available for parent/fan purchase as well. Prices for polo shirts are the same as for students. YARD SALE ON SATURDAY AUG. 16TH Band Booster Presidents, Debbie Harvey and Karen Taylor, will be sending more information soon on this event. We will need all band families to donate items for this sale. Donations will be accepted each day at the beginning and end of Pre-Camp and Band Camp. The Band Truck will be used to store all Yard Sale items. BAND BOOSTER MEETING PARENTS, want to know about all that the band is doing? COME TO THE BAND BOOSTER MEETINGS!!!! BE INVOLVED!! The first Band Booster Meeting is Thursday night August 14th at 7:00 in the Band Room. Band Boosters will meet again on Thursday August 28th. There are many functions as marching season gets underway. These meetings are very important and informative. Support our students!!!! Come to meetings and see what you can do to help. GAS PRICES AND ECONOMY Mr. Underwood and the Band Booster Executive Board are highly aware of how expensive it has become to live. Be assured that we will keep our band families in mind as we make plans for the season and year. Some of our transportation plans may be changed from charter to activity buses, and we may have to travel less distances. We will still have the two afternoon practices and one evening during the season. The Thursday evening practice is necessary because of the night-time hours to rehearse (since many of our performances are under lights) and since some of our staff members can only come during evening hours. Students are allowed to stay at school to study or relax in band room on evening practice days. Please provide a bag meal for them in this case. We wish you the best in these tough economic times. It is our goal that the experiences provided by the Band of Knights won’t suffer. We do, however, ask everyone’s patience and support as we all work through this together. SEE YOU AT CAMP!!!!!! GO BAND OF KNIGHTS!!! |
